My most recent assignment was in Kabul as On-Site Project manager for the implementation of the LifeCX software application in Afghanistan’s largest local Cellular Service provider.

Prior to Afghanistan, a summary of my most recent assignments is:

University of Pretoria:

•             A Senior Project Manager working on large Infrastructure projects, including roll-out of VoIP and WiFi systems, ICT departmental liaison with Architects and Construction companies on the design and build of new and refurbished buildings

•             IT Consultant/Advisor to the Medical Faculty, assessing and managing projects, advising on a long-term IT strategy and providing IT liaison with the National and Provincial Departments of Health.

Bytes Systems Integration:

•             A Project Manager leading seven major projects concerned with relocation of a major African Bank from Zimbabwe to Johannesburg, and establishment of a retail infrastructure for the bank in the SADC region.

•             A Strategic Specialist in a team reviewing the ICT function of the Government of Swaziland and making recommendations as to future direction.   This involved significant interaction with the King, Government Ministers and senior officials in the Swazi Government.

My prior employment history includes ICT Directorships at the Universities of Transkei and Walter Sisulu, and European, Middle Eastern and African ICT consultancy assignments with Groupe Bull, Coopers and Lybrand and Ernst and Young.

I am pragmatic and results oriented.  I fully realise the need for teamwork, and to keep smiling when the going gets tough.  I also realise the truth of the statement that management is not a democracy, and it is necessary to point this out once in a while.   Having said that, you usually get better results by using honey rather than vinegar.

To demonstrate that I am not quite ready for the Shady Pines Home for the Terminally Bewildered, please see https://www.crystalknows.com/personality/iain-robertson-6aad87cb-6b7d-46b5-a517-213c1c4afe0a - “Iain is a dynamic innovator that thrives in chaos: creative, focused, and spontaneous, they sometimes make decisions that might seem unpredictable”.

Currently my real focus is on updating my knowledge of Distributed Ledger Technology following a year or two dabbling in cryptocurrency using Bitcoin and Blockchain.    DLT will radically change the way business is conducted and will fundamentally change the IT landscape and the way in which its practitioners operate.  In addition, I am currently studying towards certification as an SAP SM Practitioner, SAP Architect and Project Manager, and renewing lapsed certifications in Prince2 and PMP.
